Post 12: The Tragedy of One Mr. Fahrenheit

How's it going internet? Welcome to the Late Night English Blog! I'm your host and possibly telepathic bag boy Andy Ferguson and tonight, we return once more to the dark side. By dark side, I of course mean tragedies, those stories we read when we want our hearts to break a little, or skip a few beats, or, in some cases, skydive without a parachute. You know, sad stories: the ones without happy endings. If you're looking for a more formal definition of tragedy, however, look no further than the oxford dictionary which says:

1.) Tragedy- An event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe.

Today, we'll be discussing a very particular tragedy. A real-life tragedy that may have occurred within some of y'all's lifetimes. If you can't tell who the tragic figure is just from the title, then you need not fear anything except my judgement regarding your music tastes. (For shame.) I'm talking about the man himself, the legend, the father of stadium rock; the one, the only, Freddie God-Damn Mercury

If you still don't know who I'm talking about, here's a picture (and a second helping of shame).

Best known as the front man and lead vocalist/keyboardist for the band Queen, Freddie Mercury was one hell of a singer. Don't believe me? Go listen to a Queen song. Any Queen song. In fact, stop reading this right now and go listen to a Queen song. It's cool. I'll wait...

. . . And we're back. See what I mean? Be it in the energetic rock song "Don't Stop Me Now" or the operatic anthem "Bohemian Rhapsody," Mercury owned every song he sang with enough passion and flair to rock a stadium into oblivion. By now, you may have started to recognize the above picture as similiar to that old victory pose meme that circled the web some years back. No, you're not imagining it, it was in fact inspired by Freddie Mercury. He was an  exceptionally talented and  beloved member of pop culture for decades and remains one to this day.

Which is why he is premature death at the age of 45 on November 24th, 1991. The news of his death came only a day after Mercury announced its cause to the world: he was HIV positive. Mercury was bisexual and had contracted the disease some years prior to the announcement. His death, then, came as a massive shock to fans all around the world. It was too sudden, too explosive, and too painful for many. Though I was not alive at the time of his death, if I had to describe it based on accounts I've read, I'd say he died like he lived: like a star.

That's all for tonight ladies and gentlemen. As always, thanks for reading! Ciao
